14 DAYS SAFARI – ULTIMATE CAPE TOWN &WINE LAND TOUR

14 Days

About this trip

HISTORY OF CAPE TOWN

The first European to anchor at Table Bay and ascend Table Mountain was the Portuguese navigator António de Saldanha. During his visit, he encountered several hundred indigenous inhabitants, a Khoe people whose economy was based on herding, hunting, and gathering. Following Saldanha’s visit, European ships frequently stopped at Table Bay to replenish their supplies of fresh water, meat, and other provisions. In 1647, survivors of the Dutch vessel Haerlem, which was wrecked in Table Bay, returned with such favorable accounts of the region that the directors of the Dutch East India Company decided to establish a supply station for ships rounding the Cape. On April 7, 1652, the company’s representative, Jan van Riebeeck, arrived to select sites for a fort and a vegetable garden. By 1657, the company began releasing men from its employ, allowing them to become free burghers (citizens) and farmers. In 1658, the company initiated the importation of slaves. Inland from Table Mountain, a second company farm was established at Newlands, and vines were planted on the slopes of Wynberg, known as “Wine Mountain.”

Overview

Cape Town, located on the southwest coast of South Africa, is a prominent port city situated on a peninsula beneath the majestic Table Mountain. The city offers a unique experience with its slowly rotating cable cars that ascend to the mountain’s flat summit, providing panoramic views of the urban landscape, the bustling harbor, and vessels en route to Robben Island. This island is historically significant as the former prison that once held Nelson Mandela.
